SEO for plumbers in Footscray

Footscray has the richest physical story of any suburb on this site and the thinnest search market. Half its dwellings are apartments now, up from a quarter in 2001. It sits on basalt clay, estuarine silt and old quarries that were filled with rubbish in the fifties and sixties. And the whole suburb generates 210 searches a month. This page argues both halves.

First, the basics

Three ways to show up. They are not the same thing.

Worth two minutes, because the rest of this page keeps them apart.

The ads

Paid slots at the very top. You bid, you pay per click, you are there this afternoon. Decided by your credit card.

The map

Three businesses. That is the whole map pack. Fourth place is a link nobody taps. Decided by your Google profile: how close you are to the person searching, your categories, your hours, your reviews. Your website barely comes into it.

The list

The ordinary results underneath. Decided by your website: your pages, your words, the sites linking to you. When we say “organic” further down, this is what we mean.

The local picture

Why Footscray needs its own page.

Footscray went up in the 1880s land boom — 5,993 people in 1881, 19,149 by 1891, as industry moved out of Melbourne and took its workers with it. The heritage area covers construction from the 1880s to the 1920s, Victorian and Edwardian, on rectangular grid subdivisions with rear laneways that originally existed so the nightsoil could be collected.

One detail separates it from Richmond and Brunswick, and it is worth knowing before you quote a job: houses here were “mostly of timber, but on larger allotments than in other inner suburbs”.

Then it changed again, fast. Separate houses fell from 66.8% in 2001 to 47.4% in 2011. Flats went from 25.0% to 37.1% over the same decade, and reached 52.3% by 2021.

The ground is the strongest material on this page, and unlike Richmond it is unambiguous. The published local history says it directly: “At the place where Footscray rises from the site of the old punt there is a layer of basalt.” The Victorian Volcanic Plains begin at the Maribyrnong River, and Footscray sits on their eastern edge.

That basalt weathers into “dominant black and red clay soils” — the same reactive family as Brunswick and the west. On the low ground toward the river it is different again: soft estuarine silts rather than clay.

And then the part nobody writes about. The quarries that cut that basalt did not stay holes. “Many sports fields throughout Footscray are former quarries now filled in” — and those sites “served as rubbish tips during the nineteen fifties and sixties” before becoming recreation land.

Water, carefully. The Maribyrnong flooded in October 2022 and it was a serious event — more than 500 properties affected, hundreds of people displaced.

But the documented damage was upstream: Avondale Heights, Maribyrnong Township, Ascot Vale. Maribyrnong is a different suburb with a different postcode, and no list of flooded Footscray streets or count of Footscray properties exists in any source we could reach.

What is documented for Footscray is more local and more useful: the council’s structure plan identifies overland flows from the underground drainage system around Raleigh and Pickett Streets, covered by a Special Building Overlay.

Demand

What Footscray actually types.

This is the thinnest market we have measured, and the page is not going to dress it up.

Timing

Burst pipes peak in winter. Rankings don't.

Hot water systems fail and pipes split when it gets cold. June through August is when the phone should be running hot. Rankings take months to move. They do not turn up because the weather did.

The work

What we'd actually do for a Footscray plumber.

01

A real page for this suburb — the list

Not a template with the name swapped. In Footscray that means being clear about whether you work on Victorian timber cottages, on new towers, or on both — because this suburb is genuinely half one and half the other, and the two are different businesses.

02

Service area set honestly — the map

Your Google profile set to the suburbs you will genuinely drive to. Footscray is small and it shares a postcode with Seddon and West Footscray, which are different housing stock. Being specific is what gets you onto the map, and on this page the map matters more than usual.

03

Local links and citations — both

Mentions from businesses actually in the area. The trader association. The builder you sub for. In a suburb with thousands of approved dwellings still to come, the builder relationship is where the volume actually is.

04

Reviews that name the suburb — the map

A review saying “came out to our place in Footscray on a Sunday” does something a five-star with no words does not. We give you the ask that gets those without it sounding scripted.

The competition

Who’s already holding the three spots.

This is the map, not the list. Three businesses fit on it. Fourth place is in the expanded local results, which is a tap most people never make.
