Who we help / Carpenters

SEO for carpenters

The biggest single search we have measured in any trade is “carpenter near me” — 5,400 a month at a difficulty of 11. That is a map query, not a website query. Which makes carpentry the one trade on this site where the Google profile is the main event and the website is the support act — and it is the exact reverse of what we found for builders.

Same day, written by a person, no obligation. We only use your details to send the audit. Or email louie@superseo.com.au.

First, the basics

Three ways to show up. They are not the same thing.

Worth two minutes, because for carpentry the difference between them decides almost everything.

The ads

Paid slots at the very top. You bid, you pay per click, you are there this afternoon. Decided by your credit card.

The map

Three businesses. That is the whole map pack. Fourth place is a link nobody taps. Decided by your Google profile: how close you are to the person searching, your categories, your hours, your reviews. Your website barely comes into it.

The list

The ordinary results underneath. Decided by your website: your pages, your words, the sites linking to you. When we say “organic” further down, this is what we mean.

Structure

We ran the suburb experiment again. This time the answer flipped.

For builders we tested the trade word against a job name and the trade word won outright — fourteen suburbs to nothing. We ran the same design here: “carpenter” plus a place against “decking” plus a place, with five places measured both ways so the comparison is like for like.

The five places measured on both phrasings, compared on volume and difficulty

Twelve places were measured on “carpenter” and all twelve have demand, 1,000 searches a month between them. Five were measured on “decking” and all five have demand.

Where the money is

The trade word is the smallest part of the trade.

Seventy-five terms measured, sixty with demand, fifty-seven distinct once duplicate clusters are counted once. Here is how the Melbourne half of it splits.

Pulled 25 September 2026. Cost per click comes out of the keyword tool in US dollars, converted at 1 USD = 1.395 AUD and rounded to the dollar, with every sum done on the rounded figure so the arithmetic reconciles.

Rent or own

What it costs to buy this traffic, and what it costs to earn it.

Start with the head term, the way we do on every trade page. This is the first time the answer has been unflattering, so it goes first rather than last.

The opportunity

If you take jobs over $10,000 you are a registered building practitioner. Almost no carpenter’s website says so.

Three changes, and the most recent commenced twelve weeks ago.

01

The threshold is $10,000, and it counts everything

The Building and Plumbing Commission requires registration for domestic building work “worth more than $10,000”, and that figure includes “the costs of labour, building materials, and GST”. A $12,000 deck is over the line. The class is Domestic Builder (Limited) — Carpentry, one of the Commission’s Limited classes, sitting alongside separate ones for waterproofing, bricklaying and floor and wall tiling. If you hold it, it is the single most persuasive thing you are not currently saying.

02

Financial requirements arrived on 1 July 2026 — and they apply to you

This is the part most carpenters will not have seen, because every summary of it is written for volume builders. The Minimum Financial Requirements cover anyone registering as a domestic builder “whether limited or unlimited”, so a carpentry registration is inside the scheme. Capacity is set by formula: maximum construction capacity = adjusted net tangible assets divided by 0.05, or twenty times your net tangible assets. The current requirements run to 30 June 2028.

03

The regulator, the insurer and the dispute resolver became one body

On 1 July 2025 the Building and Plumbing Commission absorbed the Victorian Building Authority, Domestic Building Dispute Resolution Victoria and the domestic building insurance arm of the VMIA. From 1 July 2026 the First Resort Home Warranty Scheme replaced Domestic Building Insurance on contracts of $20,000 or more, and rectification orders now reach ten years past practical completion.

Proof you can hand over

Four facts a customer can check before they book you.

A carpenter who volunteers these has separated themselves from the field in about forty words.

$10,000

The point at which the work legally needs a registered practitioner — counting labour, materials and GST together, not just your labour.

DB-L Carpentry

The actual name of the registration class. Quoting it correctly is a small thing that reads as someone who has one.

$20,000

Where first-resort home warranty cover starts. Below it there is none — worth saying plainly rather than letting the customer assume.

10 years

How long after practical completion the Commission can still order rectification. A decade of standing behind the work, and most people have no idea it exists.

Common mistakes

Five things we fix on nearly every carpenter’s site.

01

Building the whole site around the word carpenter

It is 880 searches at a A$6 click and a 28.4% break-even — the weakest head term on this site. Meanwhile cabinet making is 1,600, pergolas 1,000, decking 880 at a difficulty of 3. The trade word is the smallest room in the house and most sites are built entirely inside it.

02

A neglected Google profile while 5,400 people a month search “near me”

Wrong categories, no service area, hours that lapsed, three photographs from 2021. For a trade where proximity decides the click, that profile is not a listing — it is the shopfront, and the website is the back office.

03

Suburb pages named after the trade instead of the job

“Carpenter frankston” is 70 searches at a difficulty of 42. “Decking frankston” is 170 at a difficulty of 4. Same suburb, same customer, same van. One of those pages is worth writing.

04

Writing in trade language

“Second fix carpentry”, “wall framing”, “timber repairs”, “weatherboard repair”, “residential carpenter” — every one of them a flat zero. Fifteen of the seventy-five terms we measured came back empty and nearly all of them were words only a carpenter would use. Interestingly “commercial carpenter melbourne” is 50 a month while “residential carpenter melbourne” is nothing at all.

05

Never mentioning the registration

If you hold DB-L Carpentry you are one of the minority of carpenters who can legally take a $12,000 job, and your website almost certainly does not say it. It is the cheapest credibility available to this trade and it is sitting unused.

Areas

Carpentry SEO by suburb.

Twelve of twelve have demand. They get built biggest first, and each one waits for its own research — and on current evidence most will be named after the job rather than the trade.
