Who we help / Roofers
SEO for roofers
In Victoria, half of roofing is licensed plumbing work and half is not — and almost no roofing website in Melbourne says so. Meanwhile 880 people a month search “roof plumber melbourne”, at a difficulty of 5. That gap is the whole opportunity.

First, the basics
Three ways to show up. They are not the same thing.
Worth two minutes, because the rest of this page keeps them apart.
The ads
Paid slots at the very top. You bid, you pay per click, you are there this afternoon. Decided by your credit card.
The map
Three businesses. That is the whole map pack. Fourth place is a link nobody taps. Decided by your Google profile: how close you are to the person searching, your categories, your hours, your reviews. Your website barely comes into it.
The list
The ordinary results underneath. Decided by your website: your pages, your words, the sites linking to you. When we say “organic” further down, this is what we mean.
Structure
Roofing does have a suburb layer. It is not where we expected.
Seventeen places measured, on the two terms that actually get typed. Eleven clear the bar — and the ones that failed are not the ones we predicted.
| Place | “roof repairs” | “roof restoration” | Total | Cheapest click |

Pulled 11 September 2026, Australia-wide, except both Sunbury terms (May). Frankston, Dandenong and Geelong were re-pulled on 12 October 2026 and replace the September figures. “Roofer [suburb]” is not in this table because it came back at or near zero in every suburb tested — Frankston nil, Pakenham nil, Brunswick 10, Geelong 70. People search for the job, not the trade. In plumbing it is the exact reverse.
Demand
What roofing customers actually type.
Three head terms of roughly equal size, which is unusual — most trades we have measured have one and a long tail.

Rent or own
What it costs to buy this traffic, and what it costs to earn it.
| Share of searches captured by #1 | Monthly clicks | Equivalent ad cost | Campaign cost | Value vs ads |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One-third (the rule of thumb) | 333 | A$7,326 | A$1,500 | 4.9× |
| One-quarter | 250 | A$5,500 | A$1,500 | 3.7× |
| One-sixth | 167 | A$3,674 | A$1,500 | 2.4× |
| One-tenth | 100 | A$2,200 | A$1,500 | 1.5× |
| 6.8% (break-even) | 68 | A$1,496 | A$1,500 | 1.0× |
Cut the assumption to a tenth — deliberately pessimistic — and the campaign is still worth nearly half again what the ads are.
The opportunity
Half of roofing is licensed plumbing. Half is not.
This is the strongest page a Melbourne roofer can write, and we have not found one who has written it.
In Victoria, “Roofing (stormwater)” is one of the licensed plumbing classes. The regulations describe it as work on “any roof covering or roof flashing, or any part of a roof drainage system involved in the collection or disposal of stormwater”.
In practice that means metal roof coverings, flashings, gutters, downpipes and rainwater connections are licensed plumbing work.
And then the regulations say what the class does not cover, which is the part nobody publishes: work on non-metallic tiles, timber, concrete, glass, bitumen or slate roof coverings, and membrane applications.
So a terracotta re-point and a Colorbond re-roof are not the same kind of job in the eyes of the regulator. One sits inside a licensing regime and one does not.
Three more things from the regulator that a customer can actually check, and that almost no roofing site mentions.
Registered is not the same as licensed. A licensed plumber holds current registration plus additional practical experience and further examination. Only a licensed plumber can issue a compliance certificate.
Over $750 of plumbing work, a compliance certificate is mandatory — and that certificate is what activates the insurance. Licensed plumbers must carry at least five million dollars of cover extending six years after the work is completed, for the cost of rectifying defective or incomplete work. No certificate, no cover.
There is a restricted sub-class limited to class 10A building work — a private garage, a carport, a shed. A holder of that restricted licence may not lawfully do roofing stormwater work on a house.
Two currency notes that make most competing pages wrong as of right now.
The Victorian Building Authority no longer exists under that name — it is the Building and Plumbing Commission, and the old web addresses redirect.
And Domestic Building Insurance was replaced by the Home Warranty scheme on 1 July 2026. The threshold moved from $16,000 to more than $20,000, the cover from $300,000 to up to $400,000, with six years for major defects and two years for other defective or non-compliant work.
One last practical one. A building permit is generally not required to replace tiles with tiles or sheeting with sheeting, because the regulator treats that as repair and maintenance. But full replacement of a building element is treated as an alteration, not a repair — and changing material, or anything that affects structure, is a different question again.
The hard cluster
Asbestos: 880 searches a month, and the hardest ground on the page.
Asbestos cement roofing went onto Australian houses from the mid-1940s until the late 1980s. The Commonwealth agency’s practical test for a homeowner is simple: homes built before 1990 can contain asbestos. The total ban on manufacture, supply and use came into force on 31 December 2003.
Super Six is a brand name, not a material — one of a dozen, alongside Fibrolite, Durabestos and the rest. Corrugated sheets made without asbestos since about 1985 look much the same, which is why nobody should be identifying it by eye from the ground.
Now the part that has to be exactly right, because getting it wrong on a published page is a real liability.
A homeowner in Victoria is not banned from removing asbestos themselves. The state’s own guidance says unlicensed removal by a homeowner can be carried out, while strongly advising against it. Any page claiming otherwise is simply wrong, and roofing sites get this wrong constantly.
What is true is the rule that applies to you. Unlicensed removal of non-friable asbestos is limited to 10 square metres, and to one hour of removal work in any seven-day period. Both limits apply at once. On a roof, that is nothing.
Storms
The urgent work is real. The searches are not.
Victoria gets hit, repeatedly and expensively. The January 2020 hailstorms produced roughly 32,000 Victorian claims. The June 2021 storms produced 26,578 claims and $230 million, with 90% of personal claims being property damage rather than contents or motor. The February 2024 storms produced around 27,800 claims and $237 million.
So the work exists, at scale, on a cycle. What does not exist is anybody searching for it.
Which is exactly why the content still belongs on the page. Not as a term to chase — as the thing that earns trust before the storm.
Two facts worth putting in front of a customer, both from the regulators rather than from us.
The insurance body’s own advice is to speak to the insurer and get permission in writing before authorising any building work, including emergency repairs, because unauthorised work may not be covered.
And during a declared emergency, the usual ten-business-day cooling-off period can be suspended for emergency work by a licensed supplier to prevent further damage. The standard door-to-door protection drops away at precisely the moment the door-knockers arrive. Consumer Affairs Victoria also advises avoiding tradespeople who give only a mobile number and a first name.
Timing
Leaks in winter, restorations in spring.
The first heavy rain finds every leak, so June through August is the emergency season — then September and October bring the people who decided in winter to get the whole roof done.
Shape is indicative — a seasonal curve, not measured Melbourne roofing data. Confirm against the client's own Search Console before quoting it as fact.
Common mistakes
Five things we fix on nearly every roofing site.
Stock photos instead of your own work
Half the roofing stock photography online is American asphalt shingle, which is not a roof anybody in Melbourne has. A gallery of your own jobs — captioned with the suburb, the roof type and what was wrong — does more than any amount of copy, and it gives Google something local to read.
Nothing about licensing — the big one
880 people a month type “roof plumber melbourne” and almost nobody explains what a roof plumber actually is, which half of the work needs a licence, or what the compliance certificate over $750 gets you. It is the largest open term in this trade and it is sitting there.
Repairs and replacement on the same page
Someone with a leak and someone pricing a new roof want completely different things. One page addressed to both convinces neither and ranks for neither — and here the data agrees, because repairs, restoration and replacement are three separate terms with three separate volumes.
Cost pages that quote made-up numbers
“Roof restoration cost” is 720 searches a month, so the demand is real. The problem is that no independent body publishes Melbourne roofing prices at all — every cost guide online traces back to a lead-generation platform. Publish your own ranges with the factors that move them, and say they are yours.
Claims about how long a restoration lasts
No standards body, regulator or consumer organisation has ever quantified what a roof restoration adds to a roof's life. It is the industry's central claim and it is entirely unsourced. Saying so, and then explaining what the work actually does, beats another invented number.
