Google Business Profile

Three businesses fit in the map pack. Fourth place is behind a tap most people never make. And almost none of what decides those three spots lives on your website — it lives on a Google profile most trades set up once, in a hurry, years ago.

The problem

Your average position is lying to you.

Most rank-tracking tools give a business one number for one search. That number is an average across the area, and for map pack work it hides the only thing that matters.

We scanned two real Melbourne businesses on the same search, the same day, across a 64-point grid. One of them averaged 9.9 — a respectable-looking number that most reports would show in green.

Across those 64 points it appeared in the actual three-business map pack at one of them.

What decides it

Four things, and your website is not one of them.

01

How close you are to the person searching

The biggest single factor and the one nobody can buy. It is why the same business is first in one street and absent three suburbs away, and why the honest answer to “can we rank everywhere” is no. What we can do is make sure you win the area you are actually in.

02

Your categories

Primary category does most of the work and most profiles have the wrong one. A roof plumber listed as a general contractor is competing in the wrong race. Secondary categories widen the net, and too many of them blur what you are.

03

Your hours, and whether they are true

“Emergency plumber melbourne” runs a thousand searches a month. If you do after-hours work but your profile says you close at five, every one of those searches filters you out at eleven at night. It is the highest-value call of the week and it is a settings problem.

04

Reviews, and what the words in them say

A five-star with no text does very little. “Came out to our place in Brunswick on a Sunday” names the suburb and the job, and that is what gets read. We give you the ask that produces those without it sounding scripted.

Service area

Claiming all of Melbourne makes you weaker, not stronger.

The instinct is to list every suburb you would drive to, plus a few you would not. It feels like reach. It reads as dilution.

A service area set to the whole metro tells Google you are equally relevant to Werribee and Pakenham — sixty kilometres apart — which in practice means strongly relevant to neither. Set it to the suburbs you genuinely service and the same profile starts winning them.

Deliverables

What you actually get.

A grid scan, before and after

Your real coverage across the area on your main search, as a map rather than a number. Repeated so you can see what moved, not just be told it did.

The profile rebuilt properly

Categories, service area, hours including public holidays, services and products, attributes, and photographs of your own jobs rather than stock.

A review system you will actually use

The ask, when to send it, and how to reply — including to the bad ones, which matter more than the good ones and are usually ignored.

The rest of it

This is one of four, and they only work together.

A perfect profile on a broken site loses. A perfect site nobody links to loses more slowly.

Local SEO

The whole programme, month by month, and how the four fit together.
